On paper, there’s not much difference between the 1JZ and 2Jz. The 1JZ has a 2.5-liter displacement, while the 2JZ has a slightly longer stroke length, through the same bore, that brings the displacement up to 3.0-liters.
The bore and stroke makes all the difference between these two engines. The 1JZ has an 86 mm bore and 71.5 mm stroke, leaving it over-square and revving more aggressively, with 280 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 279 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 RPM. It can handle about 650 horsepower safely.
The 2JZ has a full-bore 86 mm stroke, leading to better low-end torque and more horses in the stable. The 2JZ produces 330 horsepower at 5,600 RPM, and 324 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 RPM. Fully modded, you can safely take the 2JZ up to around 800 HP.
Where and how you’re racing should play a big role in your chosen engine. The 1JZ is better at handling higher revs, while the 2JZ will push you off the line and out of corners harder. So take track considerations into account as well.
