What’s the best route from San Diego to Washington, D.C.?
I’m planning a cross-country road trip from San Diego to Washington, D.C. for the summer, but I’m not sure where to start with my route. Do you have any suggestions for places to stop along the way?

That sounds like so much fun! The best route from
San Diego
to Washington, D.C. looks something like this:- On the first day, drive from San Diego toTucson, Arizona. Spend your first night here and experience the city.
- Next, drive from Tucson toEl Paso, Texas for your next overnight stay. If you’d like, spend a day in the city to explore and recover before driving on.
- From El Paso, drive toFort Worth, Texas if you feel comfortable driving for nine hours in one day. If you’d prefer, though, you can always stop halfway between the two places, in or near Midland, Texas.
- From Fort Worth, drive toMemphis, Tennessee. Take a stroll down Beale Street, eat some barbecue, and soak up the atmosphere.
- Next, drive toNashville, Tennessee. While this will be a low-mileage day, Nashville is definitely worth the visit.
- Move on toRoanoke, Virginia. This will be your final stop before driving the rest of the way to Washington, D.C.!
