What’s a good penetrating fluid test method?

I’ve never thought about penetrating fluid much—I usually just grab the first one I see, but is one brand better than others? What’s a good penetrating fluid test method?

Great question! Penetrating fluid, or penetrating oil, is an oil with a low viscosity or thickness that becomes a valuable asset when you need to loosen a stubborn rusty bolt (WD-40, for example, is a type of penetrating oil.). So, are certain kinds of penetrating fluids better than others?
If you’re interested in conducting a penetrating fluid test of your own, here’s how you can give it a try:
  • Gather a variety of penetrating fluid brands, ideally across a range of prices
  • Insert bolts and screws into a board or metal sheet (these are going to be your test subjects!)
  • Tighten the screws so that they have the same torque measurement
  • To create comparable rust conditions, you can rust new bolts and screws using a hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and salt solution
  • Once the screws and bolts have developed enough rust, soak your various bolts with the various penetrating fluid you’ve chosen
  • Let the penetrating fluids sit for a few hours to work their magic
When you feel the time is right, take out your wrench and start giving the bolts a try, noting which ones were easier to remove and which ones were more difficult. Then, you should find out who the winners of your penetrating fluid test were!
Have fun with your science experiment!
