background
We’ve seen
Volkswagen
buses, sedans, and hatchbacks, but now we finally get a VW truck. That’s right; the VW Amarok has been introduced this year, and we’re loving it.
It looks as though it’ll be the latest contestant into a small truck market that’s been heating back up. The Amarok’s main competition will likely be the Ford Ranger—and they have more in common than you think.
Lots of drivers have one in common, as well: Many of us are overpaying for our

The Volkswagen Amarok: an alliance between Ford and VW

Automotive News Europe
provides new insights into the VW Amarok.
Ford
and Volkswagen apparently worked together to design, engineer, and bring to life this classy-looking truck. While we aren’t sure whether or not the Amarok will come with an EV drivetrain, we’re impressed by the specs on both its diesel and gas engines.
The gas option in America will tote a potent 2.3-liter, 298-horsepower engine, while the diesel option has a still respectable 247-horsepower rating. Four-wheel drive will come in two options: one with variable terrain selection, and the other will be permanent 4WD.

What do the VW Amarok and Ford Ranger have in common?

Ford Ranger fans will immediately spot that the Amarok shares the same infotainment screen as the Ford Ranger—which
MotorBiscuit
is quick to point out. That’s not a bad thing, considering it should be a hefty 10-12” display.
Both vehicles also use the same T6 body-on-frame platform, which makes it easier and more affordable for Volkswagen and Ford to mass-produce light-duty trucks on an assembly line. There have even been talks of the VW Amarok getting Ford Raptor parts to use in performance-oriented Amarok trim options.

What sets the Volkswagen Amarok apart from the Ford Ranger?

The body styling of the Amarok is distinctly Volkswagen—it has c-shaped taillights and a prominent VW emblem on both the grille and tailgate. The interior of the Amarok also varies from the Ford Ranger, showing off sweeping c-pillars, and a more European-style steering wheel. Drivers in the U.S. shouldn’t worry too much about the Amarok copying the beloved Ford Ranger, because it’s not even certain if VW will be selling their Amarok in America.
