What type of oil does a Honda generator take?
We’re heading out to explore some national parks this summer, and we’re using our neighbor’s RV to do so. I’m going to bring my new electric frying pan along to make the kids some griddle cakes in the mornings. My neighbor gave me his Honda generator to work the pan, but he said it might need oil. What kind of oil does a Honda generator take?

generators take 14 ounces of 10W-30 motor oil, which can be purchased anywhere you buy vehicle products and parts. In case you’re wondering what those numbers and letters mean, here’s a quick explanation:- The 10 indicates the oil’s viscosity, or thickness, at cold temperatures
- The W stands for winter
- The 30 indicates the oil’s viscosity at normal operating temperature
If the Honda generator needs oil, here’s how to replace it:
- With a flat-head screwdriver, open the front panel of the generator
- In the lower left-hand corner, unscrew the dipstick
- With a container or drain pan below the opening, tilt the generator to its side and let the old oil drain out
- Add 14 ounces of new oil to the generator
- The generator is full when the new oil comes to the edge of the opening, with the generator level
- Screw the dipstick back on
- Use a rag to clean up any oil residue
