What should you do in a dust storm while driving?
I recently moved to Arizona and some new friends told me to be aware of dust storms while I’m driving. They didn’t go into detail about what I should do, though. What steps should I take if I encounter a dust storm while I’m driving?

If you find yourself in a dust storm while driving, follow these steps:
- Pull over to the side of the roadway—or even off the shoulder if possible. Exit any highway or high-speed roadway in favor of city streets or parking lots.
- Avoid stopping in the roadway, the emergency lane, or the turn lane.
- Turn off your lights, as you don’t want another motorist using your car as a guide and then hitting you.
- Take your foot off the brake and pull your emergency brake.
- Keep your seat belt on and stay inside the vehicle until the storm passes.
- Tune to the emergency radio station and follow directions.
Hopefully, you won’t encounter a dust storm anytime soon—if ever. But if you do, you now have the knowledge to weather the storm.
