I’m a new driver and I’m going on my first drive with my mom this weekend. I studied the driving basics for my permit test, but I’m not sure I’ll know what to do when I’m behind the wheel. What things should you do before you start driving?

Congratulations on getting your permit! Practicing with your mom and taking driver’s ed are great ways to help you become a better and more comfortable driver.
To help get you situated, here are the top 10 things you should always do before you start driving:
- Buckle up!
- Adjust your seat—make sure you can reach the pedal, brake, and steering wheel comfortably.
- If necessary, adjust the steering wheel—you can raise and lower the wheel for better reach if you need to.
- **Adjust your side mirrors**—you’ll want to be able to see the road behind you and a small sliver of your car. Have your mom stand outside the car to help you get an idea of your scope of view.
- Adjust your rearview mirror—you should be able to see directly out the back windshield without needing to turn your body.
- Turn off distractions—texts can wait until you’re parked again.
- Familiarize yourself with where the turn signal, windshield wiper, and headlight controls are.
