What should I do if someone dings my car door?

What should I do when someone dings my car and then acts like it didn't happen? I was in the Target parking lot the other day, loading countless must-have items (you know the temptations of Target) when this woman dinged my car with her car door. I didn't know what to say, so I didn't say anything. Now I have a $1,000 car repair bill to match my $500 Target bill! What should I do if this happens again?

“I am familiar with the magical allure of Target, and unfortunately, parking lot dings! They happen all of the time, and usually we can never see who caused them or why they happened.
If this were to happen again and you weren’t able to see who caused the damage, you will want to do the following:
  • Take a picture of the damage.
  • Check with security and see if they have video footage of what happened. If you can get a license plate number, contact the police and file a report.
  • If there is enough damage to warrant a claim, contact your insurance company and file a
    comprehensive coverage claim
    .
If this were to happen again and you are aware of who caused the damage, you will want to do the following:
  • Advise the other driver of the damage and exchange insurance information.
  • If the other driver doesn’t comply, take a picture of their license plate.
  • Check with security to see if they have the incident caught on the security cameras.
  • Contact the police department and file a report.
  • If there is enough damage to warrant a claim, contact your insurance company and file a comprehensive coverage claim.
Keep in mind that comprehensive coverage does have a deductible. It is a good idea to estimate the cost of repairs before you contact your car insurance company. If the cost of the repairs is less than your deductible, you should pay for the repairs out of pocket and avoid a hike in your insurance rates.
If you do file a claim, remember that your rates will usually increase. If you think your rates are too high, shop around using the
