What national forests are in Tennessee?
I have a bucket-list goal to visit every national forest in the United States at least once, but I haven’t been to Tennessee yet. What national forests does Tennessee have?

only has one national forest, the Cherokee National Forest. It’s about 650,000 total acres shared between Tennessee and North Carolina
, and it’s intersected by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. However, the USDA Forest Service also manages a national recreation area in Tennessee that’s shared with
Kentucky
. Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area isn’t a national forest, but it’s managed by the same agency that runs the national forest program, and it offers lake access, hiking trails, and outdoor activities. When you visit the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee, here are some of the activities and amenities that you can enjoy:
- Access to 30 developed campgrounds
- 700 miles of trails
- Seven whitewater rivers with rafting access
- Two scenic byways
