Nickel-metal hydride batteries function very similarly to lithium-ion batteries, but can withstand much harsher temperature changes, making them ideal for areas with colder climates. Lithium-ion battery technology is newer, smaller, and lighter than nickel-metal hydride batteries, but also is more expensive to produce.
While Toyota does not yet have a fully electric car available for sale, the company produces many hybrid vehicles that use this battery technology including the Prius, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Sienna, and more.
