I’m moving to Tennessee in the next few months, and I always try to learn some of the driving laws that might be different from where I lived before. What does Tennessee’s seat belt law entail?
is a primary enforcement law. That means you can get a ticket simply for not wearing your seat belt even if no other traffic infraction occurred. More specifically, it follows these rules:
All front passengers must wear a seat belt at all times.
All rear passengers under 18 must wear a seat belt at all times.
Rear passengers aged 18 and over have the option not to wear a seat belt in the rear seat, although it’s highly recommended.
If you’re caught not wearing a seat belt, you risk a $30 ticket for the first offense including court costs, or a $55 ticket for each subsequent offense. However, the ticket does not appear on your driving record and will not cause demerit points on your license.
