Good question! In all honesty, they don’t. Unless it’s a Tesla or another line of strictly EVs, most people can’t tell whether a car is electric or not by just driving beside it.
Electric cars of the modern age don’t scream “I’m an electric car!”—unless it’s a Tesla. Most EVs look a lot like gas-powered cars, and perhaps even more so now that companies have begun to manufacture electrified versions of previous gasoline models.
One way you may be able to tell is the quietness of the vehicle’s motor. This is unlikely, however, as the road is often too loud with the sound of running engines to identify which vehicles aren’t making noise.
Some states have incentives for EVs and require zero- or low-emissions vehicles to have a decal. Depending on the state, this can help to determine whether a car is electric or not.
