What is the recommended scanning time for defensive driving?

Is there a recommended defensive driving scanning time? They keep referencing it on my homework for my driving class, and I’m really confused. I don’t remember reading about it anywhere.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re confused! Typically, it’s recommended that you scan about 12 to 15 seconds ahead of you when practicing
defensive driving
. That equals about two or three blocks when driving in the city and 0.25 to 0.38 miles when driving at 60 mph.
This recommendation is based on the idea that you’ll have more time to react to any potential hazards in your path if you see them early. A 12 to 15-second warning can make all the difference if there’s an accident ahead!
