After living overseas for a couple of years, I’m moving back home to Alabama. I still have an Alabama driver’s license, but it’s set to expire in a year. I also want to upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license so I can travel domestically without bringing my passport. How much does it cost to renew a driver’s license in Alabama?

If you want to get the new REAL ID-compliant option, the cost to renew your driver’s license in Alabama is $36.25.By getting a REAL ID, you can fly domestically when the law goes into effect on May 3, 2023. Unlike many other states, Alabama doesn’t charge any extra fees for a REAL ID. To clear up confusion, note that Alabama refers to the REAL ID-compliant driver’s license as a STAR ID or STAR driver’s license.
To renew your driver’s license, schedule an appointment or walk into your local DMV. The clerk will request certain documents to prove your identity, so bring:
- Your Social Security card
- Two documents that prove Alabama residency, such as a utility bill that’s less than 90 days old, a mortgage or lease contract, or a voter registration card
- Two forms of identification, such as your current driver’s license and passport
