What is the best year for a used Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I’m considering replacing my current (old) Jeep with a less-old (but still used) Jeep. Ideally, I’d want to find a Grand Cherokee in good shape. What are the best years to buy?

Jeep’s
Grand Cherokee
is a spacious and stylish SUV that earns stellar ratings from trusted reviewers like J.D. Power and U.S. News. But not all model years are created equally. If you’re looking for the best year to buy a used Jeep Grand Cherokee, go for the 2010 or 2016 models.
Generally speaking, you’ll want to avoid any Grand Cherokee models older than 2005. First and second generation Grand Cherokees are fraught with mechanical problems, partly because they’re so old. It’s no use investing in a used vehicle that needs thousands of dollars worth of repairs right away.
But even among newer Grand Cherokee models, it can feel like a mixed bag. While the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee boasts the lowest number of owner complaints and reported recalls (just 106 complaints and five recalls), models made between 2011 and 2014 face numerous electrical and mechanical issues that can make buying one feel like a gamble. The reliability and performance of the Grand Cherokee stabilized after 2015—making models released in 2016 or newer are also worthy contenders for a used Grand Cherokee.
