What is the best model year for a used RAV4?

I’ve always been a big fan of the Toyota RAV4. However, I’ve lived in a city where I didn’t need a car, and I got rid of mine a few years ago. Now that I move to the suburbs, I need a car yet again—I just don’t want to spend that much. What’s the best model year for a used RAV4?

Although the Toyota RAV4 has some solid new years, the best model year for a used RAV4 is generally considered 2017. Some of its top features include:
  • Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
  • Relatively low miles in most cases
  • Fair purchase price of around $18,000 according to Kelley Blue Book
  • Strong reliability ratings
  • 176-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine
  • Up to 30 mpg
  • Available all-wheel drive
The only downside is a lack of power compared to previous iterations. Toyota discontinued the
RAV4 V6
after the 2012 model year. This means you’re going to experience a drop of about 100 horsepower and a 500-pound drop in
towing capacity
in the 2017 model compared to the 2012 edition.
So if you’re looking for pure power, the 2012 edition might be the best bet. Otherwise, just stick with the features that make the 2017 RAV4 a true winner.
