What is Liberty Mutual telematics?

I’m shopping around for new car insurance and when looking for different discounts, I came across something I’m unfamiliar with: “telematics.” What is Liberty Mutual telematics?

The gist is that some car insurance companies offer telematics programs that track your driving habits, and participating could qualify you for
car insurance discounts
;
Liberty Mutual’s
telematics program is called RightTrack.
How RightTrack works depends on where you live. For example, New York policyholders will be given a device that plugs into their vehicle, while drivers in most other states use an app.
The driving behaviors the Liberty Mutual RightTrack telematics program studies include:
  • Braking
  • Acceleration
  • Nighttime driving
  • The number of miles you drive
If the data deems you a safe driver, you could save a decent chunk on your policy’s premium—anywhere from 5% to 30%. According to Liberty Mutual, the discount applies for your car insurance policy duration. You can also get an automatic discount just for signing up for the program.
But not all drivers find telematics programs appealing. If sharing so much data leaves you uncomfortable (you can see what’s collected on Liberty Mutual’s website), there are plenty of other
car insurance
discounts you can take advantage of, whether with Liberty Mutual or another provider.
