What is hillcrest driving?

I’m taking a defensive driving class. My teacher brought up hillcrest driving, but I didn’t get a chance to ask questions. What is a hillcrest, and what does it have to do with driving?

Hillcrest driving is when you’re on an uphill road and you can’t see over the top to the other side. The reason that your instructor brought up hillcrest driving is likely due to the dangers of not being able to see motorists coming from the other direction.
When you approach the top of the hill, always use a bit of extra caution. Tips include:
  • Slowing down, especially at night if you see headlights on the other side of the hill.
  • Avoiding passing another motorist as you approach the top of the hill.
  • Turning off your brights or high beams as you reach the top of the hill.
In addition, you may also want to slow down or shift to a lower gear when you start your descent down the hill. Doing so will help you maintain control. This is even more important if you’re driving on steep grades or in adverse weather conditions, such as
snow
, ice, or rain.
Now that you’re more familiar with what hillcrest driving entails, you’re better prepared to handle the scenario when it arises. Since you’re taking a moment to become a better driver, why not take a minute to find a better car insurance policy with
