Autocross has gathered quite a following since its inception in the UK in the 1940s, but even 80 years later, a lot of people are still asking, “What is autocross?”
Autocross is a competitive driving event in which traffic cones are used to mark out a course for drivers to complete in a test of vehicle agility and driver responsiveness. Each autocross event has two primary goals:
- Complete the course as quickly as possible
- Avoid hitting any cones or going off course
What draws many to Autocross is the inclusivity: anyone can compete. Drivers need only three things to compete in an Autocross event:
- a driver’s license (competitors under 18 also need parental consent)
- a car in good working order—the competition is broken into classes to account for vehicle modifications and create a fair competition
- a helmet
