Great question! A throw-out bearing is a part in manual vehicles
that helps the clutch release when you press down on the clutch pedal. This part is also known as a release bearing.
In simple terms, a bearing is a part that facilitates interaction between a moving part and a stationary part. In your vehicle, the throw-out bearing is located between the (moving) clutch pressure plate and the (stationary) clutch fork.
Everything in this system is bolted together into a sealed assembly so it can work flawlessly whenever the clutch is pressed.
If the throw-out bearing is failing, you may hear a noise when the clutch is pressed.
Unfortunately, this is usually a costly repair. The part itself is pretty cheap (usually not more than $30) but the repair is very time-intensive. You have to remove the transmission in order to replace the throw-out bearing. You’ll pay several hundred dollars at minimum for the labor costs.
Sorry to be the “bearer” of bad news! Luckily, this problem is unlikely to happen to you again as throw-out bearings tend to last for the lifetime of the clutch.
