What is a safe driving point balance in Virginia?

I don’t understand what safe driving points are. I just moved to Virginia last year and I was recently notified that I have a safe driving point on my license. What does that mean?

A safe driving point is a good thing! In most states, you can only get negative points on your license. In
Virginia
, however, you can earn a safe driving point balance of up to +5 points. This is because Virginia will give you one positive point per year you drive without committing any driving infractions.
Safe driving points counter any demerit points on your license. If you have four safe driving points and you get a four-point speeding ticket, for example, you would have net 0 points on your license. This system is nice because it rewards safe driving as well as punishes unsafe driving.
