What is a flat plane crankshaft?

I come from a loyal Chevrolet family that likes to keep up with new model releases. I just saw an announcement for the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that is set to start production later this summer and saw that a flat-plane crank is going to be in the engine. I know about cross-plane cranks, but what’s a flat-plane crank?

A Chevy fam! That Corvette release is going to be awesome, it was a hit at this year’s Chicago Auto Show.
It’s not super surprising that you may not know much about flat-plane cranks because they were originally pretty strictly in exotic European
sports and racing cars
like Ferraris and
McLarens
. Usually found in V8 or V12 engines, flat-plane crank fills a similar role as a cross-plane crank, but with some key differences.
Because flat-plane cranks were made originally for sports and racing cars, they were designed to rev up faster, meaning the vehicle would increase in speed more quickly. The crank itself holds all of its pins on a flat plane (as the name suggests) and alternates back and forth when firing to create the optimum exhaust for increased speed.
Flat plane cranks also have a more lightweight design than cross-plane cranks which have large counterweights. This is what allows the flat-plane crank to speed up so quickly. The impressive rate of acceleration does cause more vibration, though, which typically makes them louder than cross-plane crank engines.
Whether your V8 has a flat-plane or cross-plane crankshaft, you’ll want to make sure your
car insurance
has you covered in case something were to happen.
