What happens when you run out of DEF?

A warning light showed up on my dashboard saying that I need to fill my diesel fluid exhaust (DEF) tank. I’ve never seen this light show up before and I don’t know how serious it is. What happens when my car runs out of DEF?

Oh no! Having a warning light on your dashboard can be worrisome if you’re unsure how to deal with it. When you run out of DEF, failing to refill the tank could result in serious consequences for you and your vehicle.
In general, diesel vehicles offer plenty of warnings before you run out, so you’ll have time to refill the tank. However, you should still attend to the problem sooner than later. If you run out of DEF on the road, you’ll be left stranded with an inoperable vehicle.
In addition, if you leave your vehicle without DEF for too long, the DEF sensor system may break, which can cost $1,200 to replace. If you run out of DEF regularly, the entire system will become less efficient and more prone to breakdowns. Fortunately, DEF is easy to find at most fuel stations and auto shops, so you’ll be able to pick some up if you’re in a pinch.
Once you’ve refilled your DEF, ensure you’re protected on the road with the right
