What does toll-by-plate mean in Florida?

I just moved to Florida about a week ago, and I’m still getting acclimated to the state. I also noticed on my way to work that Florida has a ton of toll signs that say toll-by-plate. I’m not familiar with this term, and I don’t want to get a ticket for lack of payment. What does toll-by-plate mean in the Sunshine State?

Congrats on the move! Toll-by-plate is a type of payment for a toll road that’s available to people who don’t have a toll pass, or when the road doesn’t have a manned toll booth.
All you do is drive through the toll, a camera takes a picture of your plate, and the state sends a bill to the registered address of the car.

companies also pass this cost along to the renter of the vehicle.
Florida has 734 miles of toll roads—more than any other state in the country. As a result, many Floridians and tourists choose to use toll roads to quickly move from one place to the next. If you’re constantly using toll roads, think about buying a toll pass—SunPass or EZ-Pass—to make transit far easier and less time-consuming.
