Unfortunately, canceling
car insurance
coverage isn’t as simple as logging in on a website. Most insurance providers require a call for cancellations. Thankfully, Travelers gives you a few other options, too. Let’s explore those options in this quick guide.

How to cancel your Travelers car insurance policy

Canceling your Travelers insurance policy is a simple process, and unlike some other providers, Travelers gives you multiple ways to do it. But first, you’ll need some important information handy:
  • Your Travelers policy number, which you’ll need while canceling
  • Your effective policy cancellation date
  • The details of your new replacement policy
  • Travelers’ phone number is 1-800-842-5075. Most customers will want to call them rather than canceling in person or by mail.
With all of this information handy, you can call Travelers and speak with one of their representatives, who will ask you for the personal information listed above.
Alternatively, you can visit a Travelers insurance office near you and speak with a local agent to cancel. The Travelers agent you meet with will also need this information, so be sure to bring it along.
Travelers also lets you cancel your policy by traditional mail. This is by far the slowest option—it can take up to two weeks for your policy cancellation to take effect since it has to arrive there and be processed. You’ll need to write a letter, including your name and all of the above information, and send it to the following address:
Travelers
P.O. Box 5600
Hartford, CT 06102
It’s vital that you have a new car insurance policy in place before canceling your old one. The last thing you want is
a lapse in coverage
and the challenges that it presents you with, not to mention the higher insurance premiums you’ll end up paying in the future.
Oh, and don’t forget to notify your auto lender that you’ve changed insurance policies if you have a loan on your car. When financing your vehicle, most lenders require you to have what’s considered
full coverage
on your vehicle at all times, and they’ll need updates on any changes to your insurance coverage.

Can you cancel a Travelers policy without calling?

Yes, you can! You can sit down with a Travelers agent in person at a Travelers insurance agency near you or mail your cancellation to them directly.
Unfortunately, you can’t cancel your Travelers policy using a mobile app or their website. Note that you can’t cancel someone else’s policy on their behalf unless you have power of attorney for the policyholder.

Does Travelers charge a cancellation fee?

Very few modern car insurance companies charge a cancellation fee, and Travelers doesn’t either. There are no fees for canceling your Travelers coverage. It’s worth noting that
North Carolina auto insurance
policies might see some fluctuations in premiums when switching as a result of canceling a policy.

Does Travelers refund you if you cancel your auto insurance policy?

Yes, Travelers will reimburse the unused portion of your prepaid auto insurance policy when you cancel your policy.

Does Travelers have a grace period for nonpayment?

Unlike some insurance providers, Travelers doesn’t typically offer a grace period for nonpayment. That means a single payment being late can result in a lapse of coverage
There are exceptions and exclusions, though—some states require insurance companies to offer grace periods, and Travelers does make exceptions for disasters and pandemics. But as a general rule, Travelers can cancel your policy as soon as your payment is late and also charge you a late fee.
You’ll want to call a local agent to learn more about grace periods and what’s available in your area. But as a general rule, it’s a good idea to automate insurance payments via credit card or using the Travelers app.

Should you cancel your Travelers insurance?

There are many different reasons you might want to cancel your insurance policy, and as long as you find a new policy and prevent a lapse in coverage, it doesn’t really matter. Here are some of the leading reasons you might cancel your policy:
  • You temporarily can’t afford insurance coverage. In this case, it’s best to shop for a lower rate, reduce your coverage, or contact your provider rather than forgoing coverage altogether
  • You want better coverage or a different type of coverage
  • Your insurance premiums are changing because you’ve
    moved
    ,
    sold your vehicle
, or changed your marital status
  • You have
    homeowners insurance
    or
    renters insurance
with a different insurance provider and you’d like to bundle your policies
  • Your insurance rates have gone up and you’d like to shop around to minimize the impact
  • You’ve found cheap car insurance using the
    Jerry
app or independently and you want to switch
It’s always a good idea to research car insurance companies, read insurance reviews, gather free quotes, and compare rates whenever you shop for new auto insurance quotes. You might even find that your existing Travelers insurance plan is your best option.
Your insurance agent might offer hidden discounts you qualify for and aren’t using, too. So if you do find a great free quote or a better deductible, give your car insurance provider a call and see if they can compete with the better rates you found.
