The gear shift on my Chevy has always been a little tough, but lately it’s become kind of unreasonable. I think I need to get the transmission looked at, and possibly even replaced. How much does a transmission replacement cost for a 2009 Chevy Traverse?

Oh yikes, we really hope you don’t need to get it fully replaced. On average, a 2009 Chevy Traverse transmission replacement costs between $5,377 and $5,779 for parts and a mechanic’s labor. As far as car repairs go, this is towards the top of the list of the most expensive ones.
But, just because your transmission is damaged does not always mean you need to get the entire thing replaced. Before you start smashing open piggy banks and digging for loose change between your couch cushions, we’d advise you to have a mechanic take a look under the hood first. The sticky gear shift you described could just as easily have been caused by a transmission fluid leak, which costs about $300 or so to repair—significantly less than the cost of a brand new transmission.
