Is it illegal to drive without insurance in Georgia?

I'm thinking of letting my car insurance lapse for a few months to save money. What happens if I get caught without coverage?

“If you own or lease a vehicle in Georgia, you’re required to carry
car insurance
.
If your car insurance lapses, your provider will automatically notify the DMV. You have 30 days from the expiration date of your old policy to obtain new coverage.
If you fail to obtain insurance during this period, the DMV will send you a notice of pending suspension, and if you don’t obtain insurance during the second 30-day period, your vehicle’s registration will be suspended. To get your registration reinstated at this point, you’ll have to pay a $25 lapse fee and a $60 reinstatement fee.
