What do you do with old windshield wipers?
Recently, I was part of a service project through a non-profit organization. We did low-cost car maintenance for elderly residents of the community. Now our group has been left with 20 pairs of old windshield wipers. What do you do with old windshield wipers? Can we recycle them?

What a fantastic project! Now, when it comes to what to do with old windshield wipers, you can recycle the metal components but not the rubber portion of the blade.
Conventional rubber blades can’t be put into regular recycling. Why? In part, because they’re made of petroleum. However, you can detach the rubber blade from the metal frame and dispose of the metal in recycling.
Some silicone blades, on the other hand, may be recycled, but this will require detaching them from the metal frame. Again, the metal frames will likely be accepted at your local recycling center, but silicone may not be accepted.
Over the years, people have devised clever ways to repurpose old wipers. Here are a few ideas:
- Use old wiper blades as squeegees to wipe off water in your shower.
- Make a wind chime out of blades with varying sizes.
- Use a blade as a sweeper to wipe off outdoor furniture.
In any case, experts point out that investing in a good pair of silicone wipers is more environmentally-friendly than conventional wipers. This is because silicone wipers last longer.
