What do I do if my car was hit while parked on the street and I have no insurance?
I’ve been out of town for about a month and my car was parked out on the street. Someone must have hit my car when I was out of town because there was some damage to it when I returned. Unfortunately, my insurance also lapsed, so I’m not sure what to do next. What should I do if my car was hit while parked on the street but I didn’t have insurance?

In all likelihood, you can’t do much of anything. Although the accident wasn’t your fault, your

had already lapsed, so you likely didn’t have coverage when the incident occurred. In this instance, you can’t file a claim and a police report won’t do anything other than divulge that you had no insurance on a car on public property, which may result in a ticket or fine.Your only saving grace is to search for cameras around the area. If you’re lucky, you can use that footage to find out when the accident occurred and then set that timeline up against when your insurance lapsed. On the off-chance that your car was still insured when the incident occurred, you can file a claim even though your car insurance has expired.
