I just got my learner’s permit and I’m getting ready to do supervised driving with my parents. My instructor told me that I need to complete 10 hours of night driving, but didn’t mention any times. What counts as nighttime driving for new drivers?

First of all—welcome to the road! You’re off to a good start by double checking expectations. The time frame for required nighttime driving typically starts one hour after sunset and ends one hour before sunrise.
The main focus with a nighttime driving requirement is to
practice driving in the dark
. As long as it’s dark enough outside to make a substantial difference in road conditions, you and your supervisor can mark that time for supervised nighttime driving.Take note: Once you’ve finished your required supervised driving hours and can start driving on your own, you likely won’t be able to get behind the wheel at night until you have your license. Almost every state has restrictions on nighttime driving for unsupervised drivers with their intermediate learner’s permit, so make sure to do your research again when the time comes.
