What causes the 2015 GMC Terrain ticking noise?

I have a 2015 GMC Terrain that’s started to make a strange ticking noise. I don’t think it was there before, but it’s my husband’s car so I’m not exactly sure. Before I take it to the mechanic, I’d like to see if it’s something I can fix myself. What might be the cause of a ticking noise on a 2015 GMC Terrain?
