Knowing when and if it’s safe to let your child ride in front is a big question for any parent. Unlike many states, there is no set height and weight requirement for front seat passengers in Texas. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other guidelines you have to follow that may keep your daughter in the back seat.
Texas
law does not specify where in your car a child must ride, but it does require the following: All children under 8 years of age and under 4’9” must be properly restrained in a child safety seat.
Child safety seats must be installed according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
Passenger airbags must be manually disabled if a rear-facing car seat is installed in the front seat.
Just because it is legal for your daughter to ride up front doesn’t mean she should. In fact, studies show that children under 13 are safest in the back seat. Vehicle manufacturers design their safety equipment with adults who are at least 5 feet tall and 150 pounds in mind, so until she meets those criteria, see if thinking of you as her personal chauffeur will calm her urges to sit in the front.
