What are the best snow chains for a Toyota Highlander?
I love offroader-type vehicles. I’ve had Jeeps and Subarus for twenty years and never really saw the need for snow chains. But we just bought a Toyota Highlander for commuting, which doesn’t compete in the snow. What are the best snow chains for a Toyota Highlander with a front-wheel drive?

We hope you like the Highlander! It may not be as capable offroad or in the snow as Subaru or Jeep, but it’s still reliable and great as a commuter vehicle if you’re partial to SUV body styles. And we’re of course more than happy to help you shop for snow chains!
Depending on the year and trim level of your Toyota Highlander, you’ll have tires ranging from 16” to 20”. You’ll need to know what size tires your Highlander has before buying snow chains. We should also note that you only need snow chains on the drive wheels—in this case, the front wheels. In an all-wheel drive vehicle or a 4x4, you’d want snow tires on all four wheels.
Here are the top brands we like for snow chains:
- Peerless Auto-Trac snow chains are arguably the most popular option because they install easily and provide great all-around traction.
- KÖNIG CB-12 snow chains are a low-cost solution that is harder to install but works well. You’ll want to watch some YouTube videos when installing these as the provided instructions are quite confusing. Also, this option is out if you have 20” tires, as they’re only available for tires ranging from 15” to 19”.
- Security Chain Company Z6 Cables aren’t “chains” but cables. They’re lightweight and easy to store and manage, but they won’t provide as much grip as the other snow chains on our list
- Michelin Easy Grip Evolution snow chains are the fancy, high-end, premium entries on our list. They’re designed for scaling mountain passes through the Swiss Alps, but they might be overkill on a Toyota Highlander in an urban or suburban environment.
