What are the best snow chains for a Toyota Corolla?
My parents bought a vacation home at Lake Tahoe, and they say I’m required to have snow chains if I’m visiting in my car. What are the best snow chains for a Toyota Corolla? Can I get just anything or do I need something specific?

Lake Tahoe is beautiful in the winter months, but yes, the driving can get hairy there, especially if you have limited experience driving in the snow. We’re happy to help you find ideal snow tires for your Corolla!
The Corolla has offered a variety of tire sizes through the years, from small 13” tires in years before 1993 to the 18” tires offered on higher-level modern trims. And tire size is an important factor. You’ll need to know exactly what your tire size is before buying snow tires.
Here are some of the best options that are available within the tire size range your Toyota Corolla has:
- Peerless Auto-Trac snow chains are popular for a good reason: they’re affordable, relatively easy to install, and provide excellent traction. They also come in a wide variety of sizes and you won’t have a problem fitting them on your Corolla.
- Security Chain Company Z6 Cables are … well … cables. This makes them lighter weight and easier to manage, and ideally suited to compacts like your Toyota Corolla. They won’t provide as much grip as the other options on this list.
- KÖNIG CB-12 snow chains are cheaper, but provide ample traction. They’re harder to install though, and their provided instructions aren’t great. We recommend watching YouTube videos to see how to install these. They’re available for tire sizes from 15” to 19”.
- Michelin Easy Grip Evolution chains are the best top-of-the-line, premium-grade snow chains. They’re designed for European markets and aren’t sold directly in the US, but you can find them on Amazon. Lake Tahoe isn’t quite as demanding as the Swiss Alps, but if you want top-of-the-line snow chains, these are what you should get.
