Does home insurance cover structural problems?

I’m a new homeowner and I lay awake at night thinking about all the things that could go wrong. The walls could fall down, the foundation could crumble… Will home insurance cover structural problems?

Congratulations on your new home! Welcome to the best and worst thing about homeownership: it’s all up to you.
Home insurance policies do not cover structural problems unless a
covered peril
caused the damage.
A cracked foundation due to a malfunctioning water heater may have coverage. A five-car pile-up in your living room would definitely be covered. Hailstones the size of golfballs that crash through your skylight? Almost definitely covered.
Shoddy repair, lack of maintenance, or neglect, on the other hand, are not covered.
Still can’t sleep? If you’re up all night worried about the unknown, you can build a custom policy to protect your home from the
emergencies
you fear most. Not everything is on the table, but you can take out special endorsements for things like flooding, mold, and earthquakes.
