“To avoid getting a lemon (a car that has substantial mechanical problems), you’ll need to ask a number of questions, especially if you’re buying from a private seller who offers no warranty or guarantee.
These questions should include:
Why are you selling the car?
Do you have any receipts for maintenance?
Has the vehicle been in any accidents or had any major maintenance work done (such as a transmission or engine replacement)?
Do you have the title in hand (meaning there’s no outstanding balance on a loan)?
Can I test drive the car and take it to my mechanic?
Does anything not work (the sunroof, power window, CD player, etc.)?
Asking these questions will help you avoid any surprises or extra costs. It may also help you negotiate the price in your favor.
