Should I rent a car in Mexico City?
My husband and I have planned a Mexican getaway to Mexico City to escape the harsh Vermont winters this year. We aren’t entirely sure where we'd like to visit on our trip, but flexibility is important to us. Should we rent a car, or will we be able to get around fairly cheaply using taxis and buses?

Mexico City is a great vacation spot—and warm year-round, which is always a plus! While Mexico City offers a public transportation system, renting a car here can offer you the ability to explore at your own pace and off the beaten path.
Here are a few things to consider when renting a car in Mexico City:
- Read the fine print on your rental agreement and research your rental agency ahead of time to ensure that you aren’t facing any hidden fees when you rent.
- You’ll have to be over 25 years old to rent a car in Mexico. Some rental companies will rent out vehicles to drivers aged 21-24, but they charge an additional $10 to $20 per day.
- Mexican car insurance is mandatory when renting a car here. You’ll have to purchase at least Mexican Personal Liability Insurance coverage through the rental company.
In addition to Personal Liability insurance, it’s also essential to invest in
rental car insurance
