Should I put my windshield wipers up when my car is parked?

We’re supposed to get some freezing weather tonight, and I noticed a few of my neighbors have their windshield wipers pointing up. One of them said it stops the wipers from freezing to the windshield. Should I put my windshield wipers up when my car is parked?

The argument to leave your windshield wipers up has been around for many years, so it makes sense that your neighbors leave them up—especially if they park on the street.
If windshield wipers freeze to the windshield and you don’t defrost long enough, the wipers can break or rip.
Upward windshield wipers can’t freeze to the windshield, and the position can actually help reduce defrosting time. Plus, if the wipers are engaged when you turn off your car, they can freeze to the windshield and become damaged when you turn the car back on.
However, there are drawbacks. The wipers or windshield itself can become damaged if:
  • The blades are lifted too high
  • Debris hits the wipers
  • The blade snaps back forcefully onto a frozen windshield
