Is Virginia a no-fault state?

This is my first time shopping for a car insurance policy and I’m so confused. I thought the whole point of insurance was to pay for accidents you cause to other people. But then I learned about no-fault states and I got even more confused. Is Virginia a no-fault state?

Virginia
is an at-fault state, not a no-fault state.
In an at-fault state like Virginia, you can file for damages against the party who caused the accident. This could be a claim against their insurance company or a lawsuit for personal injury.
Keep in mind that in Virginia you will be financially responsible for the other driver’s damages
if you are found 100% at fault
, and the driver can file a personal injury lawsuit to demand the money.
If it is proven that the other driver is partially negligent for the accident, both drivers will have to handle their own financial concerns.
In no-fault states, you must file with your own policy first and there is an injury threshold for filing against the other party. Just to be safe you should look into an optional medical payment coverage so that you and your passengers are covered no matter who is at-fault.
