I’m shopping for a new BMW and really like the X1. In reading reviews, it seems like it gets referred to as several different types of vehicle. Is it even an SUV?

A rose by any other name may still smell as sweet—but that doesn’t make it any less confusing. The BMW X1 is considered an SUV. The majority of sources call it a subcompact SUV, to be precise—but there are a few who place it in the compact category.
BMW calls the X1 a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV). To be frank, that’s a category that they just made up for marketing purposes. No matter what they call it, the X1 earns high marks from reviewers and is one of BMW’s more accessibly priced models.
