Is Route 66 in Virginia a toll road?

I’m driving to Washington D.C. for a conference, and my directions have me taking Route 66 into the city. It says it’s a toll road—is that right?

This has been a question on many people’s minds since the
I-66
Express Lanes opened to single drivers a few years ago. The reason it remains confusing is because the answer is both yes, and no.
  • If you have an EZPass you can use the I-66 Express Lanes Monday–Friday Eastbound from 5:30–9:30am and Westbound from 3–7pm.
  • **If you don’t have an EZPass, you can still travel the main route of I-66, but you can’t use the Express Lanes, and there’s no toll.
  • Outside of rush hours, drivers are free to use the I-66 Express Lanes without an EZPass and free of charge.
We hope this helps you feel better prepared to head to your conference. Be sure to prepare yourself, and your car, for the busy
