Good question! Yes, red is positive on jumper cables. You’ll want to hook up the cables according to the steps below:
- Step 1: Each car should be in park, engines off, emergency brakes on. They should not be touching.
- Step 2: Take the red clip and attach it to the positive (red) terminal on the dead battery.
- Step 3: Now, take the other red clip and attach it to the positive (red) terminal on the working battery.
- Step 4: Next, take the black clip and attach it to the negative (black) battery terminal on the working battery.
- Step 5:Take the other black clip and ground it to an unpainted metal part of the car with the dead battery.
After starting the car with the good battery, let it run for one or two minutes, and then start the car with the dead battery and let it run. It will need to remain running to recharge the battery, so tell your friend to drive it around for at least 30 minutes.
Be sure to reverse the steps above when removing the cables!
