Is my international driving license valid in the UAE?

I’ve been offered an exciting opportunity to go to Dubai for two weeks, but I don’t want to rely on taxis alone to get around. I have my international driving permit from a previous trip, so can I use that to rent a car?

is always an exciting one, and it’s cool you get to go somewhere as interesting as The United Arab Emirates! It’s a good thing you already have your international driving permit (IDP)—your international license is valid in the UAE. You’ll be able to rent a car once you get to Dubai.

Keep in mind that your IDP is only valid for 12 months if your

current license is valid

. If your IDP is set to expire while you’re overseas, you should renew it before your trip. To renew your IDP, you’ll follow the same steps as you would if you were applying for the first time:

Renew with a

Be at least 18 years of age

Renew before traveling abroad

Be fully licensed—no revocations or temporary licenses

Pay a $20 permit fee

Provide two photographs that follow the

same standards as a US passport
