Is mold remediation covered by home insurance?
I recently discovered some mold in my downstairs bathroom. The plumber found a nearby leak that caused the mold, but I’m not sure how long the leak has been there. Is mold remediation covered by home insurance?

Sorry to hear that—it can be a pain to get rid of mold. The truth is, mold remediation is only covered if the mold damage is caused by a covered peril.
Water damage from burst pipes
is a commonly insured peril, but home insurance companies need to prove that the damage was sudden or accidental. If this is an old leak that simply went unnoticed, your home insurance company won’t cover mold remediation. However, if you’re positive this is a new leak, your insurance adjuster may accept the claim after an investigation.
If you need to make a mold remediation claim, here are some steps to follow:
- Take some photos of the mold damage without touching it
- Do not attempt to clean the mold yourself, as your insurance adjuster needs to investigate the area
- Contact your home insurance company about the damage
- Stay away from the affected areas until the mold has been remediated
