Is lane splitting legal in Florida?

I recently bought a motorcycle in Miami and got my license. However, I was riding the other day when I noticed fellow motorcyclists driving between cars in traffic. I didn’t think this was legal, but maybe I’m mistaken. Is lane splitting legal or illegal in Florida?

While many motorcyclists do it despite the law, lane splitting is technically illegal in Florida. Lane splitting is specifically prohibited by Florida Statute 316.209 (3), which reads:
  • No person shall operate a motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles.
If you’re stopped by police for lane splitting and cited by the officer, you can get points on your license and a fine of up to $100. Fines are not uniform in the state of Florida, and the state allows each individual county to create its own fee schedules.
