Is it safe to wear earbuds while driving?

I love listening to podcasts while I’m driving around, but I hate having to pause and switch them between my car stereo and my earbuds every time I get out to run an errand. Is it safe to just wear my earbuds while I’m driving?

Few things are better than immersing yourself in a great podcast, but, no, it is not safe to wear earbuds while driving.
Earbuds are not safe to wear while driving for two reasons:
  • They distract you from the task at hand—you know, driving
  • They reduce your ability to hear what’s going on around you like car horns, emergency sirens, or squealing tires—all the sounds that can warn you and keep you out of a car accident.
This is why it’s actually illegal in most states to wear earbuds while driving your car.
While it may be annoying to switch from your car stereo to your earbuds, doing so can help keep you and other drivers safe, which can save you money on
