Is it legal to run a credit report without permission?
Can my mom get into trouble for checking my credit report without asking me? She used to be an accountant and she’s really interested in my finances, but I’ve told her before that I’m an adult and I want to be in charge of my own money. Is it legal for her to check my credit against my will?

That sounds so frustrating! Under most circumstances, it is illegal for businesses or individuals to run your credit report without your permission. Even if you’re applying for a
new loan
or job, the potential lender or employer will need to get your permission before performing a credit check.However, some businesses may perform a soft credit pull to make sure that you’re qualified for a preapproved offer. These types of credit checks don’t require your permission. A soft credit pull won’t affect your credit score, though, and the entity checking your credit will need a justifiable reason for performing the check.
In short, your mom won’t be legally able to look at your credit report without your permission unless she’s overseeing one of your financial ventures!
