Is it dangerous to drive with a cracked windshield?

I’ve had a little crack in my windshield for a couple of weeks and everybody keeps harping on me to get it fixed. I don’t see the point. Is it really that dangerous to drive with a cracked windshield?

Sorry to break it to you, but your friends are right. It is dangerous to drive with a cracked windshield—even if the crack is small.
Repair that little crack as soon as possible for two reasons:
  • A damaged windshield provides less protection
  • Cracks in your windshield can decrease visibility
There’s no set amount of time you can safely drive with a cracked windshield. The shorter the duration, the better. Even small changes in temperature or hitting a pothole just right can graduate that tiny crack into a shattered mess.
Then there’s the retina-burning sensation you’ll get when the sun hits that crack just right and sends a laser of light right into your eye. Neither of these situations makes for safe driving.
Luckily, getting that crack fixed while it’s still small shouldn’t be that big of a deal—especially if you have good
