Is driving to Lake Arrowhead in California scary?
My husband and I want to drive to Lake Arrowhead in California for a weekend getaway. The only problem is that one of my friends told me that the drive is a bit spooky. Is it difficult to drive to Lake Arrowhead?

scary because of the narrow lanes and lack of barriers between the road and the edge of a cliff. But the lake is a beautiful place for a weekend getaway nonetheless!To get to Lake Arrowhead from the south, most people take California Highway 18, also known as the Rim of the World Highway. This 110-mile stretch of road winds through the mountains and has no guardrails, hence its reputation.
Regardless of the time of day, the key to driving to Lake Arrowhead is to use extra caution by following these tips:
- Drive slowly (even slower than the posted speed limits), especially if it’s your first time on the highway.
- Try to drive the road during the day—not only to enjoy the view but also so you can see where you’re going.
- Don’t follow motorists in front of you too closely.
- Only use high beams when necessary so you don’t blind oncoming motorists.
