Is driving barefoot illegal in Indiana?

I made the mistake of wearing shoes that were too small when I went out with a friend the other day, so I took them off at a red light. My friend insisted I was going to get in trouble if I got caught driving without my shoes. Is it illegal to drive without shoes in Indiana?

Your friend might be looking out for your best interest (or their own nose). However, you and your buddy can rest easy.
Driving barefoot is not illegal in Indiana—or in any state for that matter. So you can shed your shoes without worry. But there are still a few things to keep in mind.
Some police officers argue that driving without shoes can be unsafe. Although they consider it a better option than driving with high heels or flip-flops, it’s generally best to wear comfortable shoes that don’t accidentally interfere with the pedals while operating a car.
Plus, if you’re
involved in an accident
and you’re not wearing shoes, reporting officers may determine your bare feet were a contributing factor. Or worse, you may suffer injuries you otherwise would have not.
Staying safe on the road is all about making smart choices. And having good
car insurance
coverage is one of the best decisions you can make.
